Ashburn, GA : 1 fatality in I-75 tractor-trailer wreck in Ashburn early Wednesday morning, April 20, 2016
Two tractor-trailers caught on fire after crashing early Wednesday morning on Interstate 75 in Ashburn, with debris also damaging three other vehicles.
Senior Trooper Steve Bowen with Georgia State Patrol Post 30 in Cordele said they were notified at 3:19 a.m. The accident occurred on I-75 northbound, just south of Exit 82.
Bowen said a tractor-trailer operated by Western Express Inc., out of Nashville, Tennessee, driven by Joshua D. Floyd, 24, of Tennessee, was traveling northbound in the right-hand lane ahead of a tractor-trailer operated by JP Transportation, out of Ohio.
Floyd was slowing down and beginning to get off on Exit 82 when the JP Transportation tractor-trailer struck his trailer in the rear. The JP Transportation tractor caught on fire, causing the Western Express Inc. trailer to catch on fire. Both came to rest on the northbound Exit 82 ramp.
Bowen said the driver for JP Transportation was pronounced dead at the scene. He was unable to release the male's name at the time due to notification of next of kin. Floyd was not injured.
Three vehicles that were traveling nearby when the crash occurred were damaged by debris. Bowen said a passenger, who is a minor, in one of the vehicles reported injury to his arm from the seat belt that he was wearing.
At this time, no charges have been filed.
