BRENTWOOD, CA : A three-vehicle crash on Sunday, July 23, 2017
Despite an airlift after extrication from a three-vehicle crash in which three other people were injured, a 95-year-old woman later died at a hospital, authorities said Sunday.
Just after 4:10 p.m., firefighters responded to reports of the crash at the intersection of Highway 4 and Marsh Creek Road, East Contra Costa Fire battalion chief Ross Macumber said.
Eight firefighters arrived, meeting California Highway Patrol officers at the scene, and worked to extricate one person from one of the three heavily damaged vehicles. Arriving ambulance crews and firefighters found and treated three other victims at the scene with minor or no injuries.
CHP investigators determined a red Cadillac sedan southbound on Highway 4 was approaching Marsh Creek Road before continuing to Vasco Road when a white Hyundai sedan on Marsh Creek made a left turn onto southbound Vasco at the intersection. The Cadillac struck the Hyundai's side, sending it into a light pole, and the Cadillac then struck a black Honda stopped at the intersection, causing minor damage.
The Cadillac's female driver and passenger of the Cadillac were taken to Sutter Delta Medical Center in Antioch for minor injuries, while the Honda's driver was unhurt.
A CAL-STAR helicopter landed and took the extricated passenger, a 95-year-old woman, and a driver to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. The woman died of her injuries at 7:13 p.m.. The driver was listed in stable condition, the CHP said.
Neither alcohol nor drugs are factors, but investigators are still working to find the collision's caus, police said. Anyone with information who either witnessed the crash or was present should call the CHP at 925-646-4980.
No firefighters or officers were injured.
