Grand Rapids, MI : High school teacher was died after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle on early Tuesday morning October 7th 2014
Ottawa County authorities say a Grand Rapids high school teacher has died after being hit by a car while riding his bicycle.
The sheriff's office says South Christian High School math teacher and golf coach Rod VanDyke was struck and killed early Tuesday morning in Georgetown Township.
Staff and students were dismissed from the school Tuesday. Head of School Jim Peterson says VanDyke had worked at the school for more than 20 years and was "a favorite teacher to many students."
Authorities say VanDyke was unconscious at the scene and died at an area hospital. He was wearing a helmet and his bike had front and rear lights.
The driver tells authorities he didn't see VanDyke because of the headlights of an oncoming car.
Authorities are investigating and no charges have been reported.
