Wilmington Police say two people are dead after the car they were riding in burst into flames after hitting two utility poles.

Police said in a news release that officers were called to a vehicle fire caused by the crash around 11 p.m. Wednesday on New Castle Avenue in Wilmington. Police say an Acura sedan was speeding while traveling north on New Castle Avenue.

Authorities say the Acura's driver-side tires hit the raised center median, causing the car to spin out of control and hit two utility poles

Investigators say the car's gas tank ignited, engulfing the vehicle in flames. Paramedics pronounced the driver and the lone passenger dead at the scene.

About 70 Delmarva Power customers lost power from the crash, but service was restored Thursday morning.
