Cape Girardeau, MO : Girl, 6, injured after being struck by car while crossing street in southeast Missouri on Saturday, March 28, 2015

A 6-year-old girl on her bicycle was injured Saturday night after she was struck by a vehicle.

The accident occurred near the 800 block of South Ellis Street in Cape Girardeau, at the intersection of Walnut Street, witnesses said.

Cpl. Darin Hickey, public information officer of the Cape Girardeau Police Department, said after 7 p.m. Saturday, a black or dark blue Crown Victoria or Chevrolet Caprice was going north on Ellis Street. The 6-year-old was crossing the street with her bicycle when she was struck by the car. The car fled the scene.

The girl was taken to a hospital for abrasions and what appeared to injuries that were not life-threatening, Hickey said.

A woman who refused to be identified said she was sitting in a car on the block and watched the car speed around Ellis, Walnut and Maple streets. She said the speed limits are about 30 mph in that area, and she estimated the driver was going around 50 mph.

Other witnesses at the scene agreed the driver of the vehicle was acting strangely and possibly "showing off."

The car and driver have not been located.
