TOWN OF CALEDONIA, MN : Man killed in drug-fueled crash on Highway 33 near Portage identified on Sunday, November 27th 2016
Robert Anthony Koy, a 41-year-old man from Winona, Minnesota was killed Sunday while trying to make a U-turn on Highway 33, just east of Interstate 90-94, authorities reported.
Lt. Wayne Smith of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said Koy is believed to have been under the influence of controlled substances at the time of the crash, and he called that use by Koy a "contributing factor" to it.
The crash occurred at 2:46 p.m., and Highway 33 was closed due to the crash until 5:39 p.m., Smith said.
A sheriff's office report said Koy was driving a 2003 Oldsmobile east on Highway 33 when he turned the car into traffic to travel west on Highway 33 and was struck by an eastbound 2007 Jeep. The speed limit in that portion of Highway 33 is 55 miles per hour, Smith said. Koy was taken by ambulance to Divine Savior Hospital in Portage, where he died, the sheriff's office said.
The Jeep was driven by a 27-year-old man from Eagan, Minnesota. He and a female passenger from Eagan were also taken to the hospital, where they were treated for injuries not life-threatening, the sheriff's office said.
