HOLDEN, LA : LSP Hammond man killed in multi-vehicle crash on Wednesday, 24th January 2024

On January 24, 2024, just after 8:30 pm, Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A responded to a multi-vehicle crash on I-12 east in Holden. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 53-year-old Edward Barker of Hammond.

The preliminary investigation revealed that 55-year-old Rodney Thompson was driving a 2017 Ram pickup truck east on I-12. At the same time, Barker was driving a 2017 Dodge Challenger east on I-12, behind the Ram. For reasons still under investigation, Thompson lost control of his vehicle, traveled off the roadway to the left, and entered the median. The Ram then re-entered the eastbound lanes and was impacted by the Dodge. As a result of the impact, the Dodge rotated across the eastbound lanes and was impacted by a 2015 Freightliner tractor-trailer that was also traveling east.

Barker suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. While impairment is unknown, standard toxicology samples were taken from all drivers and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
