Madras, OR : A mother and two of her children died in a multiple vehicle crash at Highway 97 On Tuesday, May 17th, 2016
A mother and two of her children died in a multiple vehicle crash on Highway 97 just south of Madras Tuesday afternoon.
Police say a 2003 Pontiac van was stopped in a northbound lane of the highway waiting to make a left turn onto Bear Lane when another car almost rear-ended it, but managed to speed past on the right shoulder. Unfortunately, a 2015 Ford van
also traveling northbound could not avoid the Pontiac and rear-ended it at highway speeds.
The impact forced the Pontiac into the southbound lane where it collided with a 2008 Honda Accord.
The Pontiac's driver, 49-year-old Anita J. Bemrose of Madras, was air-lifted to Saint Charles Bend where she died from her injuries.
Police say Bemrose's three sons were in the van with her. A 10-year-old was also taken to Saint Charles Bend with life-threatening injuries. The two other boys, ages 12 and 14, were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Honda, 69-year-old Shirley Ayres of Madras, and the driver of the Ford, 41-year-old Bryan McDonald of Redmond, were taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
Oregon State Police troopers are asking for the public's help identifying the driver of the first vehicle that nearly collided with the Pontiac van.
Anyone with information should call OSP at 503-375-3555.
