NEW YORK, NY : Teenager killed retrieving phone from subway tracks on April, Sunday 2nd 2017
Some commuters in New York are horrified after a teenager was hit and killed by a subway train Sunday while trying to retrieve her cell phone from the tracks.
A passenger on the train, Stephan Topete, says he was headed to work when he felt a jolt then heard screams. The train had hit Deena Kadribasic, 13.
The teenager climbed down to the subway tracks after her phone fell, but she didn’t get back to the platform in time, police say.
Passengers on the train and on the platform tried their best to save the 13-year-old.
"People were trying to push the train, and everybody on the train moved to the side so we could push the weight of the train to the side. We thought the person was actually trapped in between the train,” Topete said.
The passengers eventually asked to be let out of the train to lighten it.
Topete says he got off to find a crowd of people visibly upset about what they saw.
"A lot of them were crying on the platform. I think two of them were even throwing up,” he said.
First responders arrived and rushed the teenager to a hospital, but she later died.
"Just looking at how far down it is, it doesn't make sense. I know you drop your phone, you want your phone back, but that's a long way down. It's almost four feet,” witness Bernard Malick said.
Witnesses are expressing their condolences, wishing they could’ve done more to save Deena’s life.
