Everett, WA : Two teens killed, three injured in a car crash in Edmonds on Friday night, July 22, 2016
Two teens were killed and three others injured when their car went over an embankment and struck a tree in Edmonds on Friday night.
One of the passengers, a girl, freed herself from the wreckage and was waiting by the road when medics arrived, Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said Saturday.
Two 16-year-old boys — the driver and a passenger in the backseat — died at the scene, Edmonds police Sgt. Shane Hawley said.
Two other passengers, a boy and girl, were injured and trapped inside the car. They were freed by firefighters.
The five teens were between the ages of 13 and 16, police said.
The accident was reported around 11:30 p.m. Friday on a stretch of Olympic View Drive between 180th Street SW and Andover Street. The crash scene is close to Southwest County Park.
The accident occurred on a bend along the curvy, tree-lined roadway. The road was closed for more than six hours while traffic collision investigators examined the scene.
The injured were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Two of the three were described as having serious injuries, including broken bones. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Hawley said.
The girl who was able to get out of the mangled BMW sedan and flagged down help was not seriously hurt.
“From what investigators have found so far, they don’t suspect that alcohol or drugs played a part in the crash,” Hawley said. “Speed was definitely a factor.”
The car went about 20 feet off the roadway and between about six and eight feet down the embankment before striking a large tree, Hawley said.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office has been asked to confirm the identities of the teens as well as the cause and manner of death, Hawley said.
Friday night’s tragedy was not the first time a teen was injured on Olympic View Drive.
In 2008, a 16-year-old Lynnwood girl suffered head injuries after a motorcycle crashed into a utility pole in the 9000 block of Olympic View Drive. She was a passenger on the motorcycle. The driver was convicted of vehicular assault.
