West Norriton, PA : Three people injured in a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of West Main Street and North Highland Avenue on Monday, April 25, 2016
Three people were injured in a two-vehicle crash that occurred near the intersection of West Main Street and North Highland Avenue Monday around 1:15 p.m.
According to police, a Honda minivan travelling west on West Main Street struck a Hyundai sedan travelling east. Emergency personnel extricated at least one person from each vehicle involved in the crash, which shut down Main Street from Colonial Avenue to Rittenhouse Boulevard for several hours.
The male driver and sole occupant of the Hyundai, and a female passenger in the minivan, were airlifted to area trauma centers for treatment. The male driver of the Honda, who police say was fleeing a traffic stop, was transported to an area hospital via ambulance. Their conditions have not been released.
West Norriton Deputy Police Chief Mike Kelly said the driver of the Honda had been pulled over by Norristown police on Airy Street in the area of the Montgomery County Courthouse moments before the crash. The motorist was found to have what Kelly describes as a “minor warrant” and exited the vehicle upon being stopped. When he was asked to step back into the vehicle, the driver reportedly took off at a high rate of speed.
Although Norristown police quickly ended the pursuit as a safety precaution, the driver continued onto West Main Street and was still travelling at an excessive speed at the time of the collision, Kelly said.
Cans of paint that were in the minivan were ejected from the vehicle and paint could be seen splattered on the roadway and on a utility pole that was impacted.
PECO was called to the scene because the top tension wire connected to the pole was severed and came to rest draped over other power lines on the north side of the street.
An arc of skid marks and gouged roadway led to a section of fence that was torn away from the front yard of a house in the 1700 block of West Main Street where one of the vehicles came to rest.
West Norriton and Norristown police, the Jeffersonville and Lower Providence Fire companies, Plymouth Ambulance, PECO and road crews responded to the scene.
The crash is being investigated by West Norriton detectives.
