Belmont, NC : Two drivers injured in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 85 in Gaston County early Monday morning, December 28, 2015

Two drivers were hospitalized in a wrong-way accident that shut down part of Interstate 85 in Belmont early Monday morning.

The accident, involving three cars, happened around 4 a.m. on I-85 northbound at mile marker 25. All lanes reopened just before 5 a.m.

Belmont police say a person driving the wrong way caused the wreck. Two drivers, including the wrong-way driver, were taken to the hospital. The severity of their injuries have not been released.

The driver of a third vehicle, an SUV, was not injured. Police say his vehicle flipped multiple times after hitting a car in the roadway.

Belmont police say it is possible the wrong-way driver was under the influence of alcohol. At this point, they are still investigating before a final report is released.
