Jonesboro, AR : 12-year-old boy dead after being struck by two vehicles on Dan Avenue on Monday evening, Nov 23, 2015

A 12-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene Monday evening after being struck by two vehicles.

Jonesboro police, fire and emergency responders were called to Dan Avenue and Royale Drive around 5:30 p.m. for reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.

By 5:45 p.m., officers had Dan Avenue completely blocked off to traffic. At 6 p.m., Craighead County coroner Toby Emerson arrived at the scene.

According to Jonesboro Police Department Public Information Specialist Paul Holmes, the boy was with a group of children who had just left Joe Mack Campbell Park.

"They had already crossed the street once and were attempting cross it the second time when the child was struck," Holmes said.

According to a crash report from JPD, both vehicles were headed west when the child "ran into the traffic lane from the north side of Dan in a southbound direction."

The child was hit by the first car and then thrown into the outside lane in the path of the second car.

No other injuries were reported.

Holmes said at the time the accident was reported, it had already started to get dark outside.

"Please look for oncoming traffic," Holmes said. "It's very easy for you to overlook something under those light conditions."

Holmes said this accident is a tragic reminder to stay aware of your surroundings, whether you're walking, biking or driving.

"When you're driving in an area where there could be people crossing, whether they're children or adults, a park, public establishment of any kind, please just exercise caution. Take an extra look. It won't take but just an extra second."

No charges are expected against the drivers.

All lanes of Dan Avenue were opened back up around 7:30 p.m.

Region 8 News spoke with one neighbor on Royale Drive who said she wishes the area was safer for people to walk to and from the park area.

"There is just no where for anybody to walk," Atkins said. "I have always thought there needs to be a sidewalk up there for safety."

Atkins said other improvements could be made like more street lighting and a lower speed limit.

The current speed limit in that area is 55 miles per hour.
