JANESVILLE, WI : A single-vehicle crash in Janesville on May, Wednesday 3rd 2017
The person who died Wednesday in a single-vehicle crash in Janesville has been identified as Calvin Hanchett, 38, of Janesville.
Hanchett was one of two people ejected from an SUV after it left the road and hit a tree on West Court Street between Sunset Drive and Austin Road at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Hanchett's identity was released Friday morning by the Rock County Medical Examiner's Department.
The vehicle was traveling at high speed west on Court Street when it drifted off the road. The driver overcorrected, crossed the center line, entered the ditch and struck a tree, Janesville police Sgt. Todd Kleisner told The Gazette.
The driver and a passenger were taken to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center, Janesville.
The driver, Leon Bridges, 27, of Brooklyn, who also was ejected, was listed in critical condition Friday. His front-seat passenger, Mike Asmus, 60, of Janesville, was later transferred to Mercyhealth Rockton Avenue Campus hospital in Rockford, Illinois, where he was listed in fair condition Friday, a hospital spokesperson said.
Hanchett was pronounced dead at the scene.
The autopsy was completed at the Dane County Medical Examiner's Department. Preliminary results show Hanchett's death was a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Additional testing is underway, according to a release from the medical examiner's department.
Kleisner said speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash, which is still under investigation.
West Court Street was closed for about four hours after the crash.
