Several people were injured in a crash on the Route 30 Bypass early Wednesday morning that involved checking three locations, according to firefighters.
Thorndale Fire Company firefighters were dispatched for a car accident with injuries reported serious on Route 322 under the 30 Bypass for an overturned vehicle at 1:54 a.m. Wednesday in Caln Township. Thorndale Fire Chief John Cordisco said they were also dispatched for a motorcycle accident at 2:04 a.m. Wednesday on the 30 Bypass, which was related to the initial accident.
Cordisco said that the motorcyclist traveled eastbound on the 30 Bypass when he lost control and launched off his motorcycle, over the Jersey barrier and landed in the westbound lanes. Cordisco said that a car traveling in the westbound lanes around that time had swerved to miss hitting the motorcyclist and it went over the guardrail and dropped approximately 18 feet below onto Route 322. That vehicle landed upside down.
The driver and passenger in the vehicle had safely exited prior to the arrival of first responders and were transported to Paoli Hospital by Washington Hose Company, according to Cordisco. The motorcyclist was also transported to Paoli Hospital by Minquas. The conditions of the three people injured were not immediately known.
The first responders assisted in three locations of the accident. They helped the patients on Route 322 and the patient in the westbound lanes on the 30 Bypass, and the firefighters checked the motorcycle in the eastbound lanes on the 30 Bypass for additional hazards. The motorcycle had traveled about a quarter mile farther down the road.
After the firefighters assisted with loading the patients into the ambulances, Cordisco noted that they cleaned up a lot of debris from overturned vehicle.
Thorndale fire police along with Downingtown Alert fire police had Route 322 shut down at the 30 Bypass for the entire incident, and they diverted traffic in both lanes of travel on the 30 Bypass during that time. Cordisco said that the fire police controlled the traffic to ensure the safety of the first responders while they helped the patients. Brandywine Hospital Medical 93 and Pennsylvania State Police assisted at the scene. The crews cleared the scene at 4 a.m.
