Detroit Lakes, MN : Nine children injured in ATV crash in Becker County Tuesday evening, July 26, 2016
An 11-year-old was driving an all-terrain vehicle with eight child passengers in Becker County Tuesday evening, July 26, when the vehicle overturned, injuring all nine children, authorities say.
The crash happened about 8:30 p.m. on 560th Avenue in Runeberg Township, according to Becker County Sheriff Todd Glander.
Chad Grangroth, 11, was driving the four-wheeled vehicle, known as a utility task vehicle, south on 560th Avenue when he swerved to avoid a dog, Glander said.
All nine children suffered what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries, the sheriff said.
The incident remains under investigation, according to Glander, who added that all of the occupants of the ATV were between the ages of 6 and 11.
He said one passenger, a 6-year-old boy, was airlifted to a Fargo hospital to be checked out.
He said five of the children were taken to a hospital in Detroit Lakes and three were taken to a Park Rapids hospital.
Glander said children under 12 years old are not permitted to drive ATVs in Minnesota. He said children who are 12 may drive ATVs if they are certified to do so and are accompanied by an appropriate adult.
