Memphis, TN : 15-year-old accused of stealing car, crashing into MPD cruiser near Lamar Avenue and Trezevant Street on Tuesday afternoon, December 15, 2015

A 15-year-old is in trouble after police said he stole a car and then crashed it into a police cruiser while trying to get away.

The crime spree ended Tuesday afternoon near the intersection of Lamar Avenue and Trezevant Street.

Investigators said the 15-year-old stole a black Kia when its owner left it running while he went inside the A&B Food Mart on Lamar Avenue.

Shortly after the theft, a Memphis police officer spotted the Kia and tried to pull it over. That's when the teen behind the wheel hit the gas and tried to get away.

Memphis Police Department reports he eventually drove through a private parking lot. When the suspect exited the lot and rejoined a main road, he crashed into a police cruiser.

The suspect then got out of the car and tried to run away. He was arrested a short time later.

MPD said the officer in the damaged police cruiser was not seriously injured.

The teen has been charged with theft of property, aggravated assault, evading arrest, and resisting official detention.

"He got what he deserved," Ernest Poindexter said. "He hit a police officer, and he got arrested."
