Rapides Parish, LA : Alexandria teen killed in high-speed crash on Louisiana Highway 112 at Fish Hatchery Road early Sunday morning, May 1, 2016
Rapides Parish, Louisiana
An Alexandria teenager was killed early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash in Rapides Parish, most likely due to high speed, according to Louisiana State Police.
Troopers responded around 12:15 a.m. to the crash on Louisiana Highway 112 at Fish Hatchery Road in Rapides Parish. The crash involved a 2004 Mercury, driven by 18-year-old Guillermo Maldonado-Ramos.
He was traveling "at a high rate of speed" eastbound on Highway 112 when he lost control and exited the right side of the road. The Mercury collided with a culvert and a utility pole before overturning, according to an LSP release.
Ramos was pronounced dead. He had been wearing his seat belt.
"While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and will greatly reduce the extent of injury," the release states.
Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation, according to police. Troop E Troopers have investigated 15 fatal crashes resulting in 17 fatalities this year.
Speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors are some of the leading causes of highway crashes and fatalities, police report. Such behavior reduces a driver’s ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, extends the distance necessary to stop a vehicle and increases the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a situation, according to an LSP release.
