Loveland, CO : Man allegedly runs over patrol car, crashes into Loveland building on Saturday, 5th November 2016
A 55-year-old man allegedly ran over the hood of a police car, fled from police and ran into a building early Saturday morning in downtown Loveland.
That building at 405 E. Seventh St. is the new studio site of Artisan You, a business where customers can paint their own pottery. Owner Janna Flores said in a Facebook post that the crash will delay the business' grand opening.
According to Loveland police Sgt. Bob Shaffer, patrol officer Warren Sika responded to a report of a hit-and-run around 2:55 a.m. near 10th Street and Lincoln Avenue.
A person called 911 and told dispatchers a red and white pickup truck backed up into a vehicle intentionally and then drove off.According to Sika's report, the officer attempted to pull over the pickup truck, driving without headlights, near the 900 block of North Lincoln Avenue.
Gary Beyer, the driver of the truck, pulled over for Sika but then put his vehicle in reverse and drove his truck on top of the patrol car's hood.
Shaffer said the pickup truck then fled, and went westbound on Eighth Street and then drove the wrong way on Lincoln Avenue — a northbound one-way.
Eventually, Shaffer said, Sika reported that the pickup truck turned left on Seventh Street. The officer was close enough to the vehicle near Eighth Street and Jefferson Avenue to attempt a tactical vehicle intervention — a move police use to spin a vehicle out — but was unsuccessful.
"At that point, the pickup stopped, reversed and side swiped Officer Sika's patrol car," Shaffer said.
Shortly after, the truck reportedly crashed into the building at 405 East Seventh St.
Beyer then allegedly parked the truck in the grass of a residence and ran into the backyard of 355 Southeast Third St.
"He jumped the fence and tried to get in through the back door," Shaffer said.
Shaffer said the resident of the home heard his dog bark and then saw Beyer in his backyard.
Sika and officer Jay Smith then arrested Beyer without further incident.
"I don't think they ever lost sight of (Beyer)," Shaffer said of the chase. "... (The officers) were close to him. They didn't need to call in a dog for a search."
Beyer is being held at the Larimer County jail without bond on charges of second-degree assault on an officer, attempted vehicular assault, DUI, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment, vehicular eluding, driving the wrong way on a one-way street and second-degree criminal trespassing.
Other than a minor cut on Sika's arm during the initial traffic stop, no one was injured during the incident.
