San Ramon, CA : Livermore man killed when car hits construction crane on I-680 near Bollinger Canyon Road on Thursday night, April 28, 2016
A Livermore man was killed Thursday night when his car crashed into a mobile construction crane on southbound Interstate 680 near Bollinger Canyon Road in San Ramon, authorities said Friday.
The Contra Costa County Coroner's Office on Friday identified the man killed as Carlos Garcia-Zepeda, 43.
The crash happened at 11:25 p.m. Thursday.
Authorities said the crane was being used for a Metropolitan Transportation Commission project to convert carpool lanes from San Ramon to Walnut Creek to express lanes. The crane is owned by a subcontractor on the project.
The crane had just pulled onto the freeway and was in the extreme right lane going approximately 55 mph, its driver said, when it was rear ended by Garcia-Zepeda's Honda, officials said.
Garcia-Zepeda apparently was killed on impact, officials said.
Another car hit Garcia-Zepeda's car seconds after the wreck. The driver of that car was taken to a hospital for observation. officials said.
The crash closed all southbound lanes briefly but two were later reopened, the California Highway Patrol said. A Sig-alert was also issued while the CHP investigated.
All lanes were reported clear at 6:13 a.m.
