Winn-Dixie representatives are mourning the loss of a Leesburg grocery store employee who was killed by a car Wednesday while walking to work, as he did each morning.

Scott Parrish, 58, was struck by a 2010 Hyundai SUV as he was making his way down the shoulder of U.S. Highway 27, authorities reported.

"We are shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden loss of one of our own," Tiffany Valla Hutto, a Winn-Dixie spokeswoman, wrote in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to family members and friends during this difficult time."

The Hyundai driver, 88-year-old William Thomas of Leesburg, kept traveling down the road after striking Parrish and was stopped by police about four miles north of the crash, the Florida Highway Patrol reported. His windshield was smashed and hood dented from the impact, but Thomas told investigators he thought perhaps falling debris from another vehicle caused the damage, according to Sgt. Kim Montes.
