Albuquerque,NM : Alcohol a factor in fatal Friday crash on December, Friday 29th 2017
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in a Friday evening crash that left one man dead, according to Albuquerque police.
Police said the three-vehicle collision around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Wyoming and Montgomery NE involved six people and sent two to the hospital in critical condition, where one victim died.
Steven Deskin, 30, was arrested at the scene of the crash after performing poorly on field sobriety tests.
According to the criminal complaint, witnesses saw Deskin weaving in and out of traffic and traveling 80 mph to 100 mph westbound on Montgomery before rear-ending a vehicle waiting at a stoplight.
The driver of that vehicle, whose name has not been released by police, died later at the hospital
Deskin’s 2- and 3-year-old children were riding in the back of the car in carseats, police said. They were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The officer at the scene said Deskin’s eyes were bloodshot and his speech was slurred, according to the complaint.
Deskin told the officer he had been traveling 40 mph just before the collision and consumed three alcoholic beverages earlier in the day before picking his children up from daycare.
Deskin has been charged with homicide by vehicle and two counts of child abuse without great bodily harm. He was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center, where he remained Saturday night.
