Minneapolis, MN : Local Musician In Critical Condition After St. Paul Crash on Wednesday, December 3, 2014
A local musician was critically injured in a car crash in St. Paul early Wednesday.
Pat Mackin, saxophone player for funk and R&B band Jaybee and the Routine, was driving to his Minneapolis home after a gig at the Minnesota Music Cafe in St. Paul when a car struck his.
One of the cars was heading south on Snelling Avenue and the other west on St. Anthony Avenue. Alexandria Clark, 21, collided with the car that Mackin, 61, was driving about 2:30 a.m., said Sgt. Paul Paulos, St. Paul police spokesman.
Mackin was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. He remained in critical condition Wednesday afternoon.
Mackin had been resuscitated at the scene and underwent emergency surgery at HCMC to stop internal bleeding, according to his CaringBridge.org page. His injuries included a collapsed lung, ruptured diaphragm, lacerated liver, spine fracture and mild-to-moderate brain trauma, the page said. He also had surgery to repair his damaged aorta.
"Pat is a strong, intelligent, compassionate and unbelievably talented athlete and musician," his CaringBridge page said. "Not to mention stubborn and resilient. ... Pat will overcome this and be back on stage, sax in hand, in no time!" Mackin has played saxophone professionally for more than 40 years.
Clark, of St. Paul, was transported to Regions Hospital with less serious injuries. The drivers were the only people in each car.
Investigators were looking into whether Clark committed a traffic violation that led to the crash, Paulos said.
