Scranton, PA : An 8-year-old girl is dead and her mother and sister were in critical condition on Sunday, June 25, 2017
An 8-year-old girl is dead and her mother and sister were in critical condition Sunday night after a crash on the McDade Expressway.
The crash occurred about 3:30 p.m. on the overpass above Court Street between North Main and Keyser avenues in Scranton.
Law enforcement on Sunday night had not released the victims’ names while they waited to notify other family members.
The 8-year-old died shortly after 4 p.m. in the Geisinger Community Medical Center emergency department, Lackawanna County Coroner Timothy Rowland said.
The 6-year-old girl was taken to Geisinger Medical Center Danville by helicopter, and their mother, 28, was in critical condition at Geisinger’s Scranton hospital, according to city Police Chief Carl Graziano.
At the scene Sunday afternoon, a blue four-door sedan sat just beyond the bridge, its front end mangled, windshield smashed out and air bags hanging over the crumpled hood.
The impact sprayed debris and radiator fluid across the highway.
A second car was involved in the crash, but Graziano said the lone driver in that car was not hurt.
The wreck tied up the southbound lanes for hours, and crews diverted traffic at Keyser Avenue while a reconstruction team inspected the scene.
They were still working at 10 p.m.
