Harrod, OH : 8-year-old boy killed in Allen County crash on Monday evening, February 6, 2017

An 8-year-old Harrod boy was killed Monday evening in a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Lawrence and Clum roads, northeast of Harrod in Allen County, the Lima post of the State Highway Patrol reported.

Gavin D. Reed was taken to Lima Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the patrol.

The boy was a passenger in a 2001 Ford Taurus driven by Lisa M. Alexander, 29, of Harrod. The patrol said Alexander was eastbound on Clum Road at 5:50 p.m. when her car was struck by a 2013 Ford F-150 pickup driven by Richard J. Ortiz, 31, of Flatwoods, Kentucky.

According to the patrol, Ortiz was southbound on Lawrence Road when he failed to yield at the intersection and struck the left side of Alexander’s car. The impact forced Alexander’s car off the southeast side of the roadway where it struck several tombstones in Ridge Cemetery.

The boy was sitting in the middle rear seat of the car at the time of the crash, according to the patrol.

Alexander was taken to Lima Memorial for treatment of serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. Ortiz also was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Alcohol and drug use are not a factor, according to the patrol, and safety belts were in use.

The accident remains under investigation.
