Morganton, NC : Missing couple found dead in wreckage after 2 days on May 26th 2014
Morganton, North Carolina
North Carolina state troopers investigated a deadly accident just south of Morganton.
Troopers said two people were killed after a truck went off Highway 64 near Propst Road.
Investigators believe the truck went airborne because of the tree branches broken and then ended up in the deepest part of the ravine.
An Eyewitness News crew saw a highway patrolman using a rope to get down the steep hillside to reach the overturned pickup truck.
The couple who died in the crash, Creed and Margie Goble, were in their mid-70s.
They were last seen Monday, when they left their home near Hudson, about 30 miles away.
Searchers came to the area after getting the last ping from the couple’s cellphone nearby.
"This is an area where we've had wrecks in the past and we came straight here and found the vehicle off in the ravine and unless you look over the edge you can't see it,” said Maj. Jason Black with Burke EMS. "It is right here. That's where it has been laying for two days.”
Martha Mull spotted this light on her property near the ravine on Monday.
The Highway Patrol believes it came from the pickup that crashed here, but when Mull went to investigate two days ago, she never saw the truck because of the thick brush.
"I came to the ravine and looked to see if I seen anyone but I didn't seen anything there,” Mull said.
According to the Silver Alert issued Wednesday morning, the couple may have been suffering from dementia or cognitive impairment.
Black wishes the search had turned out differently for everyone involved.
“Just despair. We really feel for the families and the victims,” he said.
Troopers said they never found any evidence the couple tried to brake before the crash.
