A 63-year-old South Florida woman was killed Sunday in a wrong-way crash on Florida's Turnpike near the Orange-Lake county line, the Florida Highway Patrol said Monday.
A Nissan sport utility vehicle driven by Hubert Gaye, 68, of Oakland was northbound on the south side side of the highway about 9:45 p.m. near Mile Marker 272 and hit a Honda Civic head on, killing the passenger in the Honda, troopers said.
The Honda driver, identified by troopers as Dwain Byrd, 32, of Margate, received minor injuries. His passenger, Vida Linton, 63, of Margate, was killed.
A southbound Jeep Liberty couldn't avoid the wreckage and struck Gaye's SUV, troopers said. The Jeep driver, Donald Wiggins, 41, of Muskego, Wis., received minor injuries.
Investigators are trying to determine why the SUV was on the wrong side of the turnpike.
