Firestone, CO : 26-year-old killed when vehicle crashed, went into river off I-25 near Firestone on Saturday, 17th August 2019 08/17/2019
The Weld County Coroner on Tuesday identified the victim of a fatal crash Saturday afternoon on Interstate 25 near Firestone.
Armando Munoz, 26, of Thornton, was driving a 2005 Sterling truck south on I-25 when a right front tire blew out at mile marker 241, near Firestone, according to Colorado State Patrol spokesman Trooper Josh Lewis. The vehicle went onto the right shoulder of the road, crashing into a guardrail and a concrete bridge wall. It continued off the bridge and rested in the river, about 30 feet below the highway.
Munoz was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police have not determined whether he was wearing a seat belt.Munoz was driving a commercial vehicle, according to a news release from the coroner’s office. Lewis said he did not know what company the vehicle was affiliated with. Colorado State Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
Munoz was the 36th person to die so far this year on Weld County roads. Through the same date in 2018, 39 people had died on Weld roads.
