Elkhart, IN : One killed in truck vs. SUV crash on Middlebury Street in Elkhart Thursday morning, February 23, 2017

One person died following a Thursday morning crash at the intersection of Middlebury Street and C.R. 15 in Elkhart.

An SUV was eastbound on Middlebury Street approaching the intersection around 9:10 a.m. when the traffic signal changed, but the SUV continued through the intersection, said Elkhart Police Department spokesman Sgt. Chris Snyder. A truck southbound on C.R. 15 swerved to avoid to the crash but couldn't.

The Elkhart Fire Department had to extricate the driver of the SUV, which took about 30 minutes. An Elkhart ambulance transported the SUV driver to Elkhart General Hospital and then transferred him to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where he was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon.

Snyder could not release the SUV driver's identity Thursday afternoon pending notification of family.

The truck driver did not report any injuries.
