Miami, FL : Twenty-five people injured after a bus collided with a sport utility vehicle and crashed into a Miami building on Thursday morning, February 26, 2015

A Miami-Dade Transit bus with students on board crashed into a building Thursday morning on busy Northwest 36th Street.

The bus was traveling west on 36th and Northwest 15th Avenue when it collided with a southbound SUV, according to officials.

The bus veered to the left and smashed into a store called South Florida Fixtures Warehouse. It has remained against the building since the 6:30 a.m. crash.

Miami Fire Rescue treated 25 people, including the daughter of the SUV’s driver. On the bus were 23 people, including students from nearby Miami Jackson Senior High on their way to school.

All of the injuries were minor, according to officials, except for the bus driver, who had more serious but non-life-threatening extensive injuries. The county’s public buses generally are not equipped with seat belts.

Ignatius Carroll, a Miami Fire Rescue spokesman, called the victims “walking wounded,” with mostly cuts and bruises.

Most of the victims were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital. Rescuers had to cut away portions of the bus to remove the more seriously injured driver.

The driver of the SUV was taken into custody for a bench warrant unrelated to the crash, according to Miami-Dade police said.

Northwest 36th Sreet between 14th and 17th avenues remained shut down past 9 a.m. as investigators worked the scene and the bus was removed from the building.

Earlier Thursday, a car crashed into a North Miami house, sending two people to the hospital.

No one in the house was hurt, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

The crash happened after a Nissan ran a stop sign at Northeast 12th Avenue and 147th Street around 2 a.m. Thursday, according to Miami Herald news partner CBS4.

Two other cars were involved, and they took off in what has become a hit-and-run case. The Nissan was heavily damaged and two people were hospitalized.

This report will be updated as more information becomes available.
