A Sutton teenager was critically injured Tuesday morning after losing control of her car, hitting the median and crashing into another car on Route 146 in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, police said.
The 18-year-old driver, whose name was not released, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. The driver of the second car, a 23-year-old woman from Central Falls, was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries, police said.
Rhode Island State Police Capt. Matthew Moynihan said the teen was driving north on Route 146 near the Pound Hill Road exit about 10:10 a.m. Tuesday when her car went from the travel lane into the high-speed lane and off the road, hitting the center median. The car then went back into the travel lane, where it was hit broadside by another vehicle, according to police.
State police closed both northbound lanes of traffic for more than two hours. The accident is under investigation.
