Leitchfield, KY : Woman killed in parkway crash on Sunday, 25th September 2016

A 21-year-old woman lost her life in a crash on the Western Kentucky Parkway on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 25.

First responders were called to the scene of the crash near the 106 mile marker of the Western Kentucky Parkway (the parkway) at 3:05 p.m. on Sunday.

Investigating Grayson County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) Sergeant Jarrod Mudd said the driver, Stephanie N. Campbell, 21, of Louisville, was travelling westbound on the parkway when the gold 2001 Nissan Xterra she was driving started to enter the median, and Campbell over-corrected, losing control of the vehicle and re-entering the median before crossing over into the eastbound lanes of the parkway.

It is unknown what caused the Nissan to enter the median.

A witness to the accident, who had been travelling eastbound on the parkway at the time of the crash, told police he saw the Nissan roll across his lane, Mudd said.

According to a news release from Grayson County Sheriff Norman Chaffins, the Nissan rolled an indeterminable number of times before coming to a rest on its passenger side approximately 688 feet from where it first entered the median.

Campbell, a student at Western Kentucky University and the only individual inside the Nissan at the time, was killed in the crash, according to Deputy Grayson County Coroner Howard Tomes.

She was extricated from her vehicle by the Leitchfield Fire Department and pronounced dead at the scene by Tomes, the release states.

Campbell’s cause of death was ruled blunt force trauma to the body, Tomes said.

Campbell was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash, according to Mudd.

The Nissan was disabled as a result of the crash and removed from the scene by a towing service.

Grayson County Emergency Medical Services also assisted on the scene.
