Norfolk, VA : Newport News man dies in fatal crash on I-664 on Wednesday, January 25, 2017

A 50-year-old Newport News man died Wednesday after his truck rear-ended a tractor trailer on Interstate 664 at College Drive.

Sgt. Michelle Anaya, state police spokeswoman, said a 2006 Freightliner tractor trailer stopped when a 2015 Ram 1500 rear-ended the trailer. The tractor trailer was following an escort through the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel.

Anaya said the driver of the Ram, Kennth McGarrh, died on scene.

Alcohol did not play a factor in the accident. McGarrh was wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident, Anaya said.

The Virginia Department of Transportation sent an alert at noon stating the northbound lanes of I-664 were closed. VDOT sent another alert at 4:39 p.m. stating the lanes had reopened.
