Swanton ,VT :Two people killed and woman facing charges after car crash on Thursday ,September 3rd 2015

Two people are dead after a car crash in Swanton, and a woman is facing charges.

Vermont state police say Maria Carlson, 35, of Swanton, was headed north on Route 7 Thursday at about 12:35 p.m. Witnesses estimated her speed at about 100 mph. Carlson's pickup went off the road, struck a utility pole, and then came back on the highway and collided head-on with a southbound car.

The driver of the car, Diane Bohannon, 68, of Alburgh, died at the scene. Her passenger, Robert Benjamin, 67, of Alburgh, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police say Carlson was seriously injured in the crash. When they spoke to her at the hospital, investigators say she couldn't remember any details from the accident.

"Said that they were behind the vehicle, the truck, a little while before the crash happened and watched the vehicle go off the road once, spit dirt up. Then go off the road again, spit dirt up and then the third time is when the crash occurred. So, that car had been swerving well before the crash occurred, so they were obviously having an issue," said Trooper John Bruzzi, Vermont State Police

She's charged with gross negligent operation with death resulting. Police say they are awaiting results of a blood test.
