PEKIN, IL : East Peoria motorcycle officer injured in crash during St. Jude Rides on Thursday, September 14, 2017

An East Peoria motorcycle police officer was injured and transported to a local hospital after an accident at 9:08 a.m. Thursday at South Second Street and Fayette Street in Pekin.

The officer was leading the St. Jude Rides that started Thursday. It is a three-day run and goes 465 miles. The St. Jude ride started in 2007 to raise funds for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and its affiliate in Peoria.

While negotiating a curve, the motorcycle’s rear tire slid and the vehicle slid into another, non-police motorcycle, Illinois State Police said in a news release. The officer and the driver and passenger of the second motorcycle were taken to OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria with minor injuries.

The run was founded by former Peoria Sheriff Mike McCoy and Brad Wiebler. A typical St. Jude Ride brings 150 motorcyclists with 76 passengers on the journey from Peoria to Memphis. Satellite rides from six cities brought the total number of riders and passengers to 280. McCoy, now the Washington police chief, was unavailable for comment at this time, according to the ride website at stjuderides.org/peoria.
