Spartanburg, SC: Man killed in a fiery crash on I-85 on Monday August 3rd 2015.
Spartanburg, South Carolina
The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office identified a man who was killed in a fiery crash on I-85 on Monday.
The coroner said Edward Ronald Martins, 77, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, was killed in the accident.
All northbound lanes on I-85 were reopened Tuesday morning as SCDOT crews continued to make repairs following a fatal, fiery crash on Monday.
Flames and smoke billowed above Interstate 85 in Spartanburg County after a crash involving a tractor trailer around 4:15 p.m. Monday near mile marker 68 on I-85 North. Troopers said the driver of a Freightliner, Martins, was traveling north on I-85, lost control, struck the median barrier wall, and caught fire. The driver was killed, according to troopers.
A second vehicle traveling south was struck by the debris from the truck and was transported.
Witnesses said the truck overturned on the northbound side of I-85 and two men tried rescuing Martins but the tractor trailer was engulfed in flames.
Witnesses told FOX Carolina Martins was unconscious. They tried to break the window and get the driver's door open.
Smoke filled the truck's cab and a fire broke out. Diesel was seen spilling out of the truck.
Witnesses said some men ran back to their vehicles to get fire extinguishers but were unable to extinguish the fire.
An explosion then happened and those who were attempting to help had to move back. The fire spread quickly, according to witnesses.
North Spartanburg, Westview, Tyger River, Startex, and Inman Community fire crews assisted with the tanker fire.
The tractor trailer was destroyed.

Northbound lanes were initially blocked as Spartanburg County deputies moved traffic through an alternate route.
Troopers established a detour for northbound traffic. Drivers were asked to take exit 66 to U.S. 29 North to I-26 West. Drivers can then merge back on to I-85 northbound.
The two leftmost northbound lanes reopened overnight. All lanes reopened just after 8 a.m.
