Lakewood, NJ : Girl, 2, dies after being struck by car in Lakewood on Wednesday, December 24, 2014

A toddler was struck and killed by a motorist backing out of the driveway Wednesday afternoon, police said in a statement.

Police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck on Forest Park Circle around 2:10 p.m. The child, a 2-year-old girl, was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune “but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries,” Det. Sgt. Greg Staffordsmith said in the statement.

Police declined to release the child’s name or any additional information, stating the incident was still under investigation. Lakewood police, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office were all taking part in that investigation Wednesday night.
