Nevada City, CA : Police officer and K-9 escape serious injury in crash on Highway 20 near Sacramento Street on Monday, February 8, 2016

A police dog and his officer-handler escaped serious injury when their parked patrol car was hit along the highway in Nevada City.

The California Highway Patrol said that at about 6:20 a.m. Monday, a Nevada City police officer pulled over a pickup on Highway 20 near Sacramento Street and was checking the driver’s license while seated in his patrol car.

A car traveling eastbound at about 50 mph, then drifted off the roadway and into the rear of the patrol car. Witnesses told the CHP that the driver did not brake.

The officer suffered a cut on top of his head. The police dog did not appear to be injured, but was to be examined by a veterinarian.

Three people in the car from San Antonio, Texas, including the driver, suffered major injuries. One person was airlifted by medical helicopter to the hospital, while the other two went by ground ambulance.

The driver of the pickup did not suffer any injury and was allowed to leave after the investigation at the scene was completed.
