Providence, R.I : Officer hit by car in Providence on early Sunday morning, July 6, 2014
A Providence police officer was struck by a car early Sunday morning while responding to a disturbance.
It happened at the intersection of Fountain Street and Clemence Street, when Officer Miguel Mena Torres was attempting to run across Fountain Street to assist fellow officers who were handling a disturbance. A car struck Mena Torres and then sped away.
Other officers located the car a short distance away and arrested the driver, who is being charged with driving on a suspended license. His name was not immediately available Sunday afternoon. The hit-and-run is still under investigation, Lieutenant Dean Isabella said, and so far police have not charged the driver with striking the officer.
Mena Torres was treated at the hospital and was released later Sunday, Isabella said.
