An Oakdale teen died in a single-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Derek Armando Dejesus, 17, was killed about 2 p.m. on La. 372, about 5 miles south of Oakdale.

Sgt. James Anderson, Louisiana State Police Troop D spokesman, said Dejesus was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Impala on the highway when, for unknown reasons, he car traveled off the roadway and struck a driveway, causing the vehicle to flip and Dejesus to be ejected.

Dejesus, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Allen Parish Coroner’s Office.

"Investigating troopers report Dejesus would have likely survived the crash had he been wearing a seat belt," Anderson said.

Louisiana law requires drivers and passengers to wear seat belts.

So far this year, Troop D has investigated 12 fatal crashes, resulting in 16 deaths.
