Lily, KY : Two people injured in a car crash in Laurel County early Friday afternoon, February 19, 2016
A Williamsburg woman, who is a University of the Cumberlands student, is in the University of Kentucky Medical Center in critical condition after being involved in a traffic accident early Friday afternoon in Lily.
The crash happened about six miles south of London about 1:05 p.m. on US25 at Echo Valley, according to the Laurel County Sheriff's Department.
Sara Hampton, 20, was driving a blue Mazda car when she pulled out from Echo Valley Road in front of the path of a Ford F350 utility truck, which was traveling north on US25, according to a release from Laurel County Sheriff John Root.
The vehicles collided on US25 with the truck, which was driven by Billy Ray Allen, of Bogg's Cemetery Road, London, coming to rest near a guardrail on the west shoulder of the road. Allen, 23, was injured but the extent of his injuries isn't known or whether he went to the hospital.
Hampton's car came to rest against the guardrail north of the impact. She had to be extricated from her vehicle.
Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County transported Hampton to Baptist Health Corbin for treatment.
She was later transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center where hospital officials listed her in "critical" condition Tuesday afternoon.
Hampton's mother, Kelli Waters Hampton, posted on Facebook Sunday that her daughter had been heavily sedated much of the time and was on a ventilator, but that she had opened her eyes and when not sedated was able to answer yes and no questions by shaking or nodding her head.
"She even gave the nurse the 'stink eye' for just a second! (She doesn't like needles lol). We were completely overwhelmed by this and needless to say, I cried like a baby," Kelli Hampton wrote on Facebook. "When I got up Friday morning, I never dreamed that by Sunday night we'd be at UK hospital fighting for the most precious life we know. I believe with all my heart that it's your prayers that are saving our baby. Thank you."
Kelli Hampton wrote on Facebook Tuesday that Sara had her first surgery, which was to repair her pelvis. Another surgery on her legs is expected later in the week.
Laurel County Sheriff's Department Public Affairs Officer Gilbert Acciardo said that the cause of the crash hasn't been determined because officers have been unable to speak to the car's driver due to her severe injuries and being on life support.
The car was totaled in the crash and the truck had severe front-end damage.
Acciardo said authorities aren't planning to file any charges in connection with the crash.
Laurel County Sheriff's Deputies John Inman and Gilbert Acciardo are investigating the crash. Laurel Sheriff's Bailiff Robert Reed, Lily Volunteer Fire Department and the London-Laurel County Rescue Squad also assisted at the scene.
