One man was killed in a motorcycle wreck on N.C. 181 in Morganton on Sunday afternoon.

Daniel Paul Emilio De Cicco, 33, of Statesville, was killed after wrecking on a motorcycle while driving north on N.C 181 in Morganton around 2 p.m. near the Upper Creek Falls entrance parking area on Sunday, said Trooper C. Hallyburton with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Cicco was traveling with a group of around 15 to 20 motorcyclists and, prior to the wreck, NCSHP received a call complaining about speeding and careless and wreckless driving of the group of motorcycles, he said.

By what witnesses said, there was a space between Cicco and the other riders, he said.

“There was some (motorcyclists) up in the front … and he was pretty much riding by himself and, from my understanding, he had been caught behind a slower car,” he said.

Cicco ran off the right side of the road and struck the guard rail and was ejected from the motorcycle, Hallyburton said.

He was driving a Suzuki 1000, according to police.

CPR was administered by another rider that was behind Cicco, but he died from his injuries at the scene, Hallyburton said.

“We had questioned several of the other riders to see if they had any GoPro cameras (attached to their bikes) to see if we could see if speed was a factor or negligent driving, but none of them were able to have it (recorded) on their cameras,” he said. “Several of them had them (cameras), but they were not near him or were not in the same area when he crashed or either they were still behind him and came up on it after the fact.”

Police say there was no indication of speeding, but he may have misjudged the curve.

It was a four lane zone and there were no indications of any other vehicles in his lane.

Cicco did not have a camera on his bike at the time, he said.

Responding agencies were North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Trooper J. Byland, Trooper J. Allen, Trooper D. Wakefield, 1st Sgt. K.B. Joines, Burke REACT, Burke County EMS and Jonas Ridge fire department.
