Gardena, CA : 2 men who led police on high-speed chase killed when car collides with SUV in Gardena on Sunday, AUG 30, 2015

The California Highway Patrol says two men who led police on a high-speed car chase through South Los Angeles were killed when they ran a red light and their small sports car slammed into an SUV.

CHP spokesman Edgar Figueroa tells the Los Angeles Times that the small Scion was "mangled" in the collision with the Chevy Suburban early Sunday in Gardena.

Figueroa says the driver of the Suburban was hospitalized but is expected to survive.

Officials say the chase began around 2:30 a.m. after officers saw the Scion doing doughnuts in an intersection, with a crowd gathered to watch. The officers tried to stop the car, but it sped away.

The ensuing pursuit ended about three minutes later with the fatal crash.

The names and ages of the two dead men were not immediately released.
