A motorist is facing charges after he struck and seriously injured a pedestrian early Monday morning before driving off, authorities said.
Police caught up with the alleged driver minutes later at the Interstate 890 Broadway exit and arrested him. The victim suffered a serious head injury, according to court documents.Authorities said later Monday morning that the victim was still in critical condition at Albany Medical Center. Police did not release his name later Monday, citing pending notification of family.
Danny Nelson, 35, of Linden Street, faces one count of leaving the scene of a serious personal injury accident, a felony.
According to police, he was driving west on State Street, near Mohawk Ambulance, just before 12:30 Monday morning when he struck the pedestrian.
Nelson was arraigned and ordered held on $15,000 bail. He remained in custody Monday evening.
The charge against Nelson rose to a felony due to the serious nature of the man's injuries. Hours later, a woman faced a similar charge, accused of injuring a high school student near Pleasant Valley Elementary School and leaving the scene.
That woman was charged with a misdemeanor as the student's injuries weren't deemed to be serious.
