Nashville, TN : Woman hit by SUV, critically injured in Green Hills on Monday morning, September 22, 2014

An elderly woman was struck and critically injured Monday morning while crossing Abbott Martin Road in the Green Hills neighborhood of Nashville. The accident happened at 7:45 a.m. at the intersection of Cross Creek Road. Metro police stated 85-year-old Grace Mason was in the crosswalk when she was struck by a 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche. The driver, a 17-year-old, was attempting to turn left from Cross Creek onto Abbott Martin at the time of the crash. The driver told police the traffic light was green; he glanced down at his console and did not see Mason as he turned. The release states the cross walk was also green for Mason at the time. She was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with critical injuries. Further updates on her conditions were not immediately known. There was no indication of alcohol or drug involvement, according to police. Authorities said the preliminary investigation showed that a failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk is the primary contributing factor to the accident.
