A Spartanburg Police officer was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after being involved in a crash in his cruiser on Friday, according to Highway Patrol.
At 11:38 a.m., police were called to Cedar Springs Road near the intersection of Southport Road where an officer veered off the road and hit a tree in a marked patrol car.
Derrick Canada, 36, was transported to Spartanburg Regional Hospital before being booked into the detention center.
Troopers said it was determined by the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office that Canada was under the influence.
Captain Art Littlejohn with the Spartanburg Police Department said vehicle collisions involving officers are not investigated by the officer's jurisdiction, per South Carolina Code of Laws and the policy of the Spartanburg Police Department.
