Fremont, OH : Former Olympian dies in multivehicle crash on State Rt. 53 in Sandusky County on Monday, May 16, 2016
A woman killed Monday in multivehicle crash on State Rt. 53 in Sandusky County was a world-class hurdler who was a member of the 1968 and 1972 U.S. Olympic teams.
Mamie A. Rallins, 74, of Port Clinton, also was the first female African-American head coach in OSU's history. Hired by Ohio State University as the first coach for the school's women's track and cross country teams in 1976, Ms. Rallins coached at Ohio State for 18 years. She also served as one of the coaches of the 1996 and 2000 U.S. Olympic track teams.
On Monday, Ms Rallins was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers said she was driving north about 3 p.m. on Route 53, just south of the Ottawa County line, and went left of center, hitting the left rear of the trailer of a southbound tractor-trailer rig driven by John Berryman, 37, of Oregon.
Her car then struck the left side of a southbound tractor-trailer driven by Matthew Dotson, 30, of Norwalk, Ohio, causing his rig to go off the highway and into a ditch. Ms. Rallins’ car spun back into the northbound lanes and was struck by a northbound car driven by Bruce E. Below, troopers said.
None of the other drivers suffered serious injuries, troopers said.
