Vevay, IN : Wisconsin man killed after semi truck crashed into an Indiana home in Switzerland County on Tuesday morning, May 5, 2015

A semi-truck driver died Tuesday morning after crashing into a house in Switzerland County.

Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call at about 6:30 a.m. reporting the wreck on East State Road 156 near Paddlefish Drive, according to the Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash happened just south of Belterra Casino Resort & Spa near Vevay.

Deputies found David A. Wessely, 62, of Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, inside his semi that had slammed against a house under construction about 8 feet off the road.

No one was inside the property when the crash happened, the sheriff office stated.

A witness, Rosemary Bovard, said the house was lifted off its stilts foundation because of the impact with the truck. Officers said Wessely was hauling about 20,000 pounds of rolled steel at the time.

Emergency medical responders said Wessely died at the scene.

Officials said the crash could have been much worse if it had happened an hour later when the area sees heavily school bus traffic.

The ongoing traffic investigation is being handled by the sheriff’s office and Indiana State Police.
