Salida, CO : Icy roads cause morning wreck Tuesday on Tuesday, January 17th 2017
A driver who lost control on U.S. 285 at Nathrop Tuesday morning caused a two-vehicle wreck that resulted in minor injuries and closed the highway for about an hour.
The incident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. near milepost 143, said Colorado State Patrol Trooper Brandon Wilkins, who responded to the scene.
A Nathrop woman lost control of her 2004 Ford F-150 pickup while driving northbound on U.S. 285, which was icy at the time, Wilkins said.
The Ford spun and crossed into the other lane, where a Buena Vista man was driving southbound in a 1995 Chevy pickup, said Wilkins.
The driver of the Chevy was unable to get out of the Ford’s path, and the two pickups collided, Wilkins said.
The Chevy was struck in the front, the Ford was hit on the left side, and both vehicles came to rest in the southbound lane, he said.
Both drivers were taken by Chaffee County Emergency Medical Services to Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center, and both were expected to be released from the hospital by afternoon, Wilkins said.
No other passengers were in the vehicles, he said.
Wilkins said he could not provide the names of the drivers.
U.S. 285 was closed for about an hour, and traffic was routed around the wreck via CR 286.
The driver of the Ford was issued a citation for careless driving, Wilkins said.
