Santa Clarita Valley, CA : Two men, a woman and child injured in crash on Interstate 5 in Castaic early Thursday, April 14, 2016
Two men, a woman and a child were injured in a crash that shut down Interstate 5 early Thursday when a big rig veered off the freeway and hit a utility pole, bringing wires down on their car and flipping it over in the Santa Clarita Valley.
The four, all residents of Shafter in the Central Valley and apparently all members of the same family, were rushed to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital shortly before midnight Wednesday. A 17-year-old boy, Isaac Yanez, in the same family vehicle, suffered no injuries.
The four injured people were occupants of a new Jeep and were identified as 45-year-old Johnny Yanez, the driver; 24-year-old Mathew Yanez; Lori Yanez, 41, and Steven Yanez,
The big rig, a 2014 Freightliner, wound up on its side down an embankment. The driver — identified as Jaime Moreno, 40, of Yucaipa — suffered no injuries.
The incident began about 11:10 p.m. Wednesday as Moreno was driving the big rig in the No. 4 lane of the northbound Interstate 5 south of Parker Road.
The Jeep was traveling in the No. 1 lane of the northbound I-5, also south of Parker Road.
“For undetermined reasons,” Moreno allowed the big rig to travel to the right off the roadway, CHP Officer G. Ward wrote in a report. “The big rig traveled down a dirt embankment, overturned and collided with an Edison power pole and a chain link fence. The power pole collapsed, Ward wrote, causing high-voltage power lines to dip onto the freeway, as well as The Old Road and Castaic Road.
Those power lines fell directly in front of the the Jeep, Ward wrote. The Jeep struck the power lines, causing it to overturn onto its roof.
Caltrans was called to the scene to help with lane closures. All lanes were reopened about 3:30 p.m.
Southern California Edison responded to repair the downed power lines.
Neither alcohol nor drugs was believed to be a factor in this collision.
